Motorized Chairs: Choosing a Mobility Platform for an Active Lifestyle

by Faith Perkins

Have you noticed that motorized chairs are starting to look like robots? That's no coincidence. Since robotics met the motorized chair, more people are enjoying a more flexible and independent lifestyle. If your goal is to have a more physically active and independent life, do not shop for an assisted living aid. Shop for a mobility platform that accommodates a more active lifestyle.

Following are mobility features the active individual does not have to compromise on in a motorized chair.

Maneuverability

Motorized chairs are adding height and more directional options without compromising comfort. Before buying, try out the starting action at different seat heights. Some chairs can be adjusted as high as a flexible 12 inches. You should be able to easily reach for an item on a store shelf while maintaining stability. If you want to further extend your mobility and range, opt for a chair that also moves from left to right.

Though independent mobility is no longer limited to one level. Stairlift power chairs can go up and down levels and scooter power chairs can board vehicles, providing complete mobility and independence. With smart robotic sensors, you can mount former obstacles with confidence. These smart chairs sense obstructions and adjust the ride and radius for smoothness.

Turning Radius

Another key maneuverability metric is the turning radius. With a tight turning radius, you can comfortably manage through narrow spaces. In a chair with a turning radius of less than 20 inches, you do not have to give a second thought to using special workout equipment at your local gym or entering a crowded market to go shopping.

Front, Mid or Rear Wheel Drive?

Rear-wheel drive provides power and performance without having to compromise on the stability and maneuverability formerly only provided by mid-wheel drives.  Front-wheel drives negotiate tight spaces well. A chair with all three options—front, mid, and rear—can accommodate all your daily activities. Test out speed, seat height, and direction (forward-back, left-right) while your body is in action.

Suspension

Suspension plays an important role in ensuring these mobility features are comfortable to use, while exerting minimum stress on your body. Advanced sensors work with other chair components to finely tune comfort to match your position, angle, and weight distribution, all the while sensing and adjusting to the terrain.

If your chair looks more like R2-D2 than the traditional motorized chair, it may be the right chair for your active lifestyle.
